In the act of trade and navigation Britain forced the American colonies to trade only with English or ships heavily taxed by England. In 1764 Parliament passed a law saying sugar and molasses were to be tax, and paid in cash. This act was called the Sugar Act. To pay in cash was especially hard for colonist because they relied on the barter system. In 1765 Parliament passed another law were colonist had to pay taxes on official seals on legal papers, playing cards, and newspapers. This was called the Stamp Act. This was also to be paid in cash. In result of anger toward England for passing all these laws and acts the colonists organized, boycotting all of the things taxed by the Stamp Act. In 1774 the British punished the Massachusetts colony for there acts at the Boston Tea Party. The British moved the Capital to Salem. They closed Boston Harbor. England also sent 4000 troops to enforce these laws. In result of all this Americans set up the First Continental Congress. The declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. After these events war was inevitable with England. Geography had a major effect on the start of the American Revolution. The Atlantic Ocean separated England and the American colonies, but still the British demanded control over the united states. The proclamation of 1763 was a Royal order to stop the colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains. The distance between the two made it especially hard for Britain to enforce their laws on the American colonies. To enforce their laws Britain sent soldiers to live in American colonists homes in 1765. This was called the Quartering Act. The Metamorphosis of Guy Montag Essay Example For Students
The Metamorphosis of Guy Montag Essay Ray Bradbury originally wrote his novel, Fahrenheit 451, as an indictment against the censorship evident during the McCarthy era of America, and it has since become one of the few modern science fiction books that can be considered a classic. The adulation of this novel is due to its plethora of symbols, metaphors, and character development. Bradburys character development is singularly impressive in this book because he shows the evolution of the main character, Guy Montag, from book-burner to living-book (Johnson 111). His maturity is displayed by his growing understanding of the world in which he lives and by seeing the flaws in his society. Bradbury illustrates Montags metamorphosis with him changing from a mindless burning drone to his maturation and acceptance into a society of like-minded booklovers. We will write a custom essay on The Metamorphosis of Guy Montag specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The first words of Bradburys novel state, it was a pleasure to burn (Bradbury 3). These words sum up the beginning character of Montag; he enjoys burning, and his job is to answer alarms not to put out fires, but to start them (Moore 103). Guy Montag is a fireman, a man who is trained to spray kerosene on books, and light them in a spectacular show. He has never questioned his job or the reasoning behind burning books. He takes pride in his position, even shines his beetle-colored helmet as he hangs it on its hook (Bradbury 4). With fire Montag brings down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history, and he revels in the power of destruction that fire holds (Bradbury 3). His only view of fire is a product of his job as a fireman; he sees fire as a machine, which simply burns and devours the freedom of the people. In this period of his life, Montag feels comfortable with machine, especially the machines that produce fire. He sees nothing wrong when his wife lip-reads his words instead of listening to him speak. When Montag first meets his young neighbor, Clarisse, he thinks of her in a mechanical mindset (Johnson 111). He sees them walking, as if fixed to a sliding walk, letting the motion of the wind and the leaves carry them forward (Bradbury 5). Hence, Montag feels comfortable around the soulless technology of his society; he loves to burn and to destroy, and he cannot think about the morals that surround his job and his culture. Montag is first pushed towards rejecting his society when he meets Clarisse. She is brave enough to question society and in doing so causes Montag to question the morals of his civilization. Clarisse is the one who represents those imaginative values that Montag lacks and which he must acquire and she awakens in him the desire to read (Touponce 126-8). Montags first reaction is to laugh off Clarisses questions; he seems uneasy with the thought of reading. His emotions and laughing reaction reveal his nervousness around a young girl, who can so easily challenge the values that he has followed all his life. Clarisse is also important because she awakens Montag to the natural world. She asks him if he knew there was a man on the moon, or if he knew what it means when a dandelion rubs off on a chin. Clarisse is the one who introduces Bradburys theme that nature is good and technology is bad (Huntington 113). Clarisse lets Montag experience freedom from his society because the novel expresses this vision of freedom with images of sentimentalized nature (Huntington 112). She leaves him feeling that something in Montags world has changed, that he was not happyhe wore his happiness like a mask and the girl had run off across the lawn with the mask (Bradbury 12). Montag can no longer accept the world the way it is, and thus, either he, or it, must change. He then comes home to his wife, Mildred, to find her near death from a suicide attempt. .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 , .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .postImageUrl , .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 , .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707:hover , .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707:visited , .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707:active { border:0!important; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707:active , .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707 .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud9b4dc2943e0bbbcb00cce9d8550f707:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Peace is the sturdy child of terror. Essay Topics For Environmental Issues - Why They Are Important To You
Essay Topics For Environmental Issues - Why They Are Important To YouEnvironmental issues have been in the news lately, with issues such as global warming and climate change. For many students, essay topics for environmental issues are very important to prepare for. But not all students should be preparing for this topic, since there are also other alternatives for students to focus on. Therefore, finding a topic that is appropriate for them can be one of the most difficult aspects for students to consider. There are several different places that students may turn to when it comes to selecting topics for their essay. Most students simply head to the library to find topics that are not specific to their major or where they do not already have a passion for. When a student is considering an essay topic, one option that many students go for is a more general topic which they feel will appeal to a broader audience. But this may actually be more detrimental than helpful for a student who i s interested in this topic.Even if a student has chosen a topic that they feel is appropriate for their school, another mistake that many students make when they are reviewing their college essays is not making sure that their essay topics are on-topic. For example, if the student is writing about global warming, but their topic is the benefits of 'green' products, then they will not get a good grade for their essay. The main problem with having too much focus on a particular topic is that it will limit a student's ability to express their own personal views on a particular topic.Another important thing to remember when it comes to your essay topics for environmental issues is that you will not get a very good grade if you are talking about something that you are not passionate about. If you are an environmentalist, for example, then you will not get a good grade if you are discussing a policy that will affect people negatively. So, it is important that you make sure that your essay topics are based on personal experience rather than a specific topic that you are highly passionate about.Another way to avoid some mistakes when it comes to essay topics for environmental issues is to make sure that you do not just rely on one source for your information. You should read a variety of sources, from the local newspaper to a book or website. It is important that you review as many resources as possible, as each resource can have some very useful information that can help you with your essays. Finally, keep in mind that environmental issues are very important to many students and may affect them directly in their lives. Therefore, many students are strongly motivated to write essays which address these issues. This is why it is so important to remember to focus on issues that are relevant to the current environment. Sometimes it is better to focus on the past rather than on the future. These tips should help students who are applying to or planning to go to high school to write better essays. However, remember that your own experiences and feelings on the topic will vary greatly depending on how much you care about it. Make sure that your essay topics for environmental issues are based on personal opinions rather than ones that are strongly influenced by a specific topic.

Free Essays on Ethics Of 9
Free Essays on Ethics Of 9/11 The events of September 11, 2000 have greatly altered the lives of the American people. Today we find ourselves living in a scared nation where people are constantly worried about terrorist activities, and when or where the next terrorist strike may be. Our citizens twitch every time the terror alert level moves to orange. We hesitate when we board airplanes, or even attend a baseball game. Americans rely on a sense of safety and the events of 9/11 have definitely made everyone think twice about exactly how safe our country actually is. In the wake of these cowardly attacks we have taken decisive action in fighting a war on ââ¬Å"terrorism.â⬠Over the past week we have discussed the morality of the war in Iraq, and have heard speeches from both Mr. Seacord and Mr. Zerella. These two gentlemen both made some interesting arguments that raised a lot of questions about the morality of what we are doing in Iraq. On the fist day of class we discussed the trolley problem where we talked about both intrinsic value based reasoning, and benefit based reasoning. We discussed when, or if, it would be permissible to sacrifice someoneââ¬â¢s life in order to save other lives. Both Mr. Seacord and Mr. Zerella used different types of reasoning to either justify or dismiss the reasons for going to war in Iraq. While they both made good arguments there were several questions about both strategies. Mr. Zerellaââ¬â¢s argument reflected a benefit based system of reasoning. Zerella contended that ââ¬Å"It is the moral obligation of the president to protect the citizens of the United States, especially when the people who will be harmed are not U.S. citizensâ⬠(Zerella 1). He believes that the sacrifice of non U.S. citizens is permissible to ensure the safety of the United States population. He argues that the sacrifice of Iraqi lives was morally right because if we didnââ¬â¢t act then there wou ld be a loss of American lives as a result of inaction. I understand what h...

Slavery in the United States Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
Slavery in the United States - Research Paper Example In 1612 English planter John Rolfe who settled in Jamestown, Virginia was credited with successfully cultivating tobacco as an export crop in Virginia. Earlier English settlers did not like the taste of the tobacco grown there. In order to improve the taste Rolfe crossed the breed from Trinidad which had a sweeter taste with the Virginia tobacco to produce a plant that took well to the local soil. Rolfe was the first to cultivate these plants in North America and its export resulted in a boost of the Virginia colonyââ¬â¢s economy. The popularity of tobacco in England and the available land in the Virginia colony led to plantations all over Virginia. Tobacco crops could best grow on extensive farmland. Growers constantly needed additional labor. Colonial leaders wanted indentured servants. That included ââ¬Å"20 and some odd Negroesâ⬠brought to Virginia by a Dutch ship in 1619.â⬠Blacks had been captured in Africa and were sold at auction in Jamestown. There have been c onflicting accounts indicating how the first blacks in America were treated. ââ¬Å"The status of the first blacks in the New World remains somewhat mysterious, and any thesis about the change in black status generates sharp controversy.â⬠... e were many black indentured servants in Virginia and Maryland during the much of the 1600ââ¬â¢s there was also enough white indentured servants that were able to work the plantations in those and other colonies. However during the 1660ââ¬â¢s the supply of white servants declined due to the declining birth rate in England. This decline resulted in increased wages for the English so many chose to remain there. In order to make up for this loss planters in the Chesapeake region would get enslaved Africans to work their plantations.4 (Slavery Takes Root in Colonial Virginia). The number of slaves would increase in these colonies as years passed. In the 1660ââ¬â¢s slavery spread quickly throughout the colonies. There were more slaves in the South where large plantations grew cotton and other crops. Initially there were no clear laws regarding slaves and some black and white slaves were given freedom after several years. During this time the American colonies passed laws that sti pulated relationships between slaves. One of these laws forbade intermarriage between white colonists and black slaves. Another law indicated that black slaves and the offspring of female slaves would be enslaved for the rest of their lives. These laws were known as slave codes. Under the slave codes slaves were also not allowed to own weapons, get an education, they needed permission from their masters if they wanted to move, and were prevented from testifying against whites in court. (Becker) Slaves on small farms had more freedom than plantation slaves. ââ¬Å"This premise, combined with the natural population growth among the slaves, meant that slavery could survive and growâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Becker 1660 section) Some reasons why Africans were chosen as slaves was because that more miners were needed, the

Mastering Time Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Mastering Time Management - Essay Example Successfully identifying the different tasks is one half of the time management battle. Managing these priorities with disciplined follow through is the other half. In order to be successful in today's world, the student, business executive, housewife or teacher must be able to identify and follow through with disciplined tenacity. In their breakthrough time management book The One Minute Manager, Johnson and Spencer developed the following four quadrant graph which can be used by any person seeking to develop a greater control over their time usage. The graph is based on breaking down tasks into 4 categories, and identifying their importance relative to your this category. Tasks which are not urgent or important can swallow hours of time, like a check written against a zero balance bank account, return nothing. Quadrant 2 tasks are not important, but urgent none the less. Sometime answering the phone or email can seem like an urgent matter. However, even these simple tasks can steal time from more important issues. Quadrant 3 and 4 are the most important tasks which cross your desk every day. Left unattended, these items typically are those which grow into major issues, or 'forest fires' which will require significant amounts of time and energy to subdue if not handled when they are first identified. Quadrant 4 tasks are already small fires which need immediate attention. Quadrant 3 contains those items which will become forest fires if not managed immediately. The key to successful time management is identifying first and foremost the quadrant 3 tasks and priorities. According to the authors, these issues will account for 80% of a person's success or failure in live. Quadrant 3 issues can be managed easily with maximum return on the time spent if they are successfully addresses while in quadrant 3. If these tasks grow to be both urgent and important, they will likely move to control the person, rather than the person controlling them. For example, paying government taxes each year is an important, but not urgent matter. However, if a person does not pay taxed or file returns for a number of years, and the matter comes to the attention of the IRS, the person no longer is in control of the process. The government agency will dictate how, and when, and how much will be paid. The agency will control the person rather than the person controlling the simple task of paying taxes little by little. The second half of effective time management is disciplined follow through. A person can be excellent on determining the priorities of their tasks. However, if he or she does not follow through, and effectively complete the tasks, he or she may as well live with no tasks or to do lists at all. Any person, regardless of talent, intelligence, or income level will be no more effective than his or her willingness to follow through, and do the work. The world is full of unemployed geniuses. Anyone can have great ideas, and bask their 'fifteen minutes of fame' only to disappear into oblivion. The person who consistently performs his or her prioritized tasks will eventually
